Find a recorded disposal again, and know which surface to hand your preparer.
Where this is in the app
The disposed asset: Dashboard → open the return → Assets tab → open the asset. Its header reads Disposed asset.
The Disposals report: Dashboard → open the return → Report tab → Report Template → Disposals
Once a disposal is recorded, its figures appear in four places.
The asset's own page
Open a disposed asset and the page header reads Disposed asset. Below it:
Disposal Details — three rows: disposal date, sale proceeds, and original cost.
Calculation Breakdown — the same cost-to-gain table you saw before committing, plus a Target Form row and the recapture panel.
Asset Information — the schedule fields: placed in service, original cost, recovery period, and method.
For a like-kind exchange, casualty, or installment sale, a further card carries the per-form breakdown line by line, exactly as it read when you recorded it. A condemnation does not get one: §1033 routes to Form 4797, and the per-form card only renders for the three kinds that route away from 4797.
The Undo disposal button is on this page.
The Disposals report
Go to the Report tab and pick Disposals from the Report Template dropdown. The section is headed Asset Disposals, and its columns are description, placed in service, disposal date, target form, original cost, accumulated depreciation, adjusted basis, sale proceeds, and gain/loss. Click a row to expand its full calculation detail, including the year-by-year depreciation and the disposal-year fraction.
Group By, in the report header next to Report Template, can be set to Gain/Loss Type, Recovery Period, GL Account, Activity or Source Category, or left on No Grouping. Grouping adds subtotal rows. A totals row runs across the bottom either way.
Below the table, disposals that carry figures forward get a Disposition form figures block and the matching carry-forward note.
The Form 4797 tab
The Form 4797 mapping page shows how disposals map onto the form.
An asset whose Property Type is Land — not depreciated maps with no depreciation and no recapture: its adjusted basis is its full cost, and the gain or loss is proceeds less that basis. Held more than one year it lands on Part I; held one year or less it lands on Part II. The disposition detail row labels it "Part I" or "Part II" and never "Part III".
The Dispositions worksheet
On the Report tab, the Export menu gains a Dispositions worksheet (XLSX) item under Worksheets whenever the return has disposed assets. This is the file to hand your preparer.
It is a multi-sheet workbook:
Sheet | Contents |
Caveats | The §1031, §1033, and §453 carry-forward notes |
4797 | Every disposed asset in the return, with a total gain row |
8824 | Like-kind exchanges |
4684 | Casualties and thefts |
6252 | Installment sales |
The form-specific sheets carry only the disposals routed to that form. Involuntary conversions are not among them. A §1033 condemnation routes to Form 4797, so it appears on the 4797 sheet with every other disposal, and the 4684 sheet's condemnation and §1033 replacement-basis columns stay empty. Assets disposed before this detail was captured also appear on the 4797 sheet only.
The worksheet exists because no tax package accepts a machine import of Form 8824, 4684, or 6252. Your flat tax-software export carries the sale data that lands without re-keying. This workbook carries everything those flat columns have no room for.
