Get the year-of-sale Form 6252 Part I figures for a sale you are collecting over time.
Where this is in the app
Dashboard → open the return → Assets tab → open the asset → Dispose → Disposition Kind → Installment sale (§453)
New to the disposal screen? Start at Record a disposal.
Choose Installment sale (§453) in the Disposition Kind dropdown and a dedicated step opens below the disposal form, headed Installment sale — §453 (Form 6252, Part I). The Record disposal button is replaced by a line reading "Complete the §453 installment-sale step below to record this disposition."
The step opens for a full-asset disposal that has not already been disposed and whose preview shows a gain. There is no property-type restriction. If the preview shows a loss, see "If the step doesn't open" below.
Steps
Fill in Sale details. Three fields:
Selling price (L5)
Buyer-assumed debt (L6)
Selling expenses (L11)
The selling price drives the disposal's proceeds, and the selling expenses are saved onto the asset, so both feed the shared gain figure the rest of the page shows.
Read the Form 6252 Part I breakdown. It opens with a read-only strip carrying Adjusted basis (L10) and the §453(i) §1245/§1250 recapture recognized now, both computed from your depreciation schedule and not editable here. Below that the derivation updates as you type, ending in installment-sale basis, gross profit, contract price, and the gross-profit percentage.
Read the Gain composition panel. It splits the gain into what is recognized now and what is eligible to spread, in three clearly labelled rows, rather than showing a single net number.
Read the Carry these to Form 6252 (year of sale) card. This is the short list of figures to hand off: gross profit, gross-profit % (marked "reuse this every future payment year"), contract price, and the recapture recognized now.
Record the disposition. The button reads Record installment sale (Form 6252).
Year-of-sale figures only
The step shows an amber banner headed Year-of-sale figures only:
DepreciationPro computes the year-of-sale installment figures only — gross profit, gross-profit %, contract price, and the §1245/§1250 recapture recognized in full this year (§453(i)). It does not track payments received in later years or apply the gross-profit % to them. Carry the gross-profit % forward: your tax software/preparer owns the multi-year Form 6252 payment stream and the imputed-interest split.
The same text appears on the Reports tab and in the Dispositions worksheet.
There is no replacement asset on this kind. Nothing carries into a replacement, so no replacement preview is offered.
If the step doesn't open
Pick Installment sale on an asset whose computed disposal is a loss and the product shows an amber panel headed An installment sale can't report a loss, with a Switch to sale button that drops the kind back to Sale and re-runs the preview. The Record disposal button is suppressed while that panel is up, so Switch to sale is the way forward.
