Splitting assets: common questions

A
Written by Andy

Short answers to the questions that come up first about splitting. For the full picture, start with Split one asset into the pieces it really is.

Where this is in the app

Dashboard → open the return → Assets tab → open the asset → Split asset

Does splitting change my totals?

No. Every allocated figure sums back to what the original held, to the penny. The Allocation Preview shows the total row so you can check it before you confirm.

Is the original asset deleted?

No. It is reduced to its own share and keeps its identity, its history, and anything attached to it. That is what makes undo possible.

How many pieces can I make?

Up to 20 per split, counting the original asset. Add piece is disabled at the limit, and the screen reads "Maximum of 20 pieces per split."

Do my percentages have to total 100?

Yes, in Percentage mode. The screen shows the running total and will not build a preview until it reaches 100%.

In Dollar amount and Units mode you enter only the new pieces. The original balances to the remainder automatically.

Can I split by dollars or by count?

Yes. Percentage, Dollar amount, and Units. Pick whichever matches your source document. See Choose how to divide a split: percentage, dollars, or units.

Does a piece restart depreciation?

No. Method, convention, recovery period, and placed-in-service date are inherited unchanged, and each piece carries its share of the depreciation already recorded.

When does a split take effect?

At the start of the asset's current open tax year. The split screen names the year. There is no date to enter.

Can I rename the original asset while splitting it?

Yes. The original's row on the split screen has an editable description, pre-filled with its current one. Renaming there happens inside the same action, and an undo restores the old name.

Leave any description blank and it is filled in for you. The original keeps its name, and new pieces are named after it with a (split 2/3) suffix.

What happens to my state allocations?

They are copied to each piece at the same percentages. The original keeps its own rows.

What about notes and attachments?

They stay on the original record. They are not copied to the new pieces.

Why can't I split this vehicle?

Splitting is blocked for vehicles and listed property because §280F limits apply per asset. DepreciationPro treats an asset as one when it has a gross vehicle weight, a VIN, or a business-use percentage below 100. See When an asset cannot be split.

Why can't I split a CIP asset?

A construction-in-progress asset accumulates cost at the cost-line level, so the product directs you to divide the cost lines rather than the summary record.

Can I split a fully depreciated asset?

Yes.

Can I undo a split?

Yes, while every piece is untouched. Once a piece has been edited, deleted, or disposed, the button is disabled and the reason is listed. See Undo a split.

I disposed of a piece. Can I still undo the split?

No, and this one does not come back. The block message suggests reversing the disposal first, but doing so does not restore the undo: recording the disposal counts as a change to the piece, so the "edited since the split" block takes over. Treat a split as permanent once you have disposed of a piece.

Where is the Undo split button?

On the original asset's page, in the Split Lineage card. Pieces do not have one.

Do I split before disposing of part of an asset?

No. Dispose part of this asset does both in one confirmation. See Splitting an asset, or disposing of part of it and Dispose part of an asset.

How do I find the pieces later?

Both sides carry a Split Lineage card. The original shows Split into N assets with links, and each piece shows Split from with a link back. The asset history also carries Split and From Split entries.
