What carries over to each piece of a split

A
Written by Andy

Know exactly what each piece of a split inherits before you rely on one of them.

Where this is in the app

Dashboard → open the return → Assets tab → open the asset → Split asset → Allocation Preview

The pieces are not blank new assets. Each one is created carrying the original's schedule settings and its own share of the original's figures.

Copied unchanged to every piece

These fields are inherited exactly as the original holds them. Nothing is recalculated.

The split screen states this on the form: children keep the original's method, convention, recovery period, and placed-in-service date, so the shape of the schedule never changes.

Allocated by your shares

These are divided by the shares you enter, penny-exact.

  • Original cost

  • §179 election

  • Prior accumulated depreciation

  • Prior §179, prior bonus, and prior other depreciation

  • MACRS depreciable basis

  • Land value

  • Total purchase price

  • Salvage value

  • Total lifetime units and current-year units

The Allocation Preview table shows four of them: cost, prior accumulated depreciation, §179, and MACRS depreciable basis. The rest are allocated by the same shares without being shown there.

Book records

Each piece gets its own book record for every book the original had, Tax and Book (GAAP).

  • Allocated by share: book salvage value and accumulated book depreciation.

  • Copied unchanged: book method, book convention, useful life in months, in-service date, and the accumulated-depreciation-as-of date.

State allocations

Each piece gets a copy of the original's state allocation rows at the same percentages. The percentages are shares of an asset, so copying rather than dividing them keeps each piece's state treatment matching the original's.

The original keeps its own rows untouched.

A blank stays blank

Where the original has no value for a field, the pieces get no value either. DepreciationPro does not substitute a zero.

This matters for the nullable figures: MACRS depreciable basis, land value, salvage, the prior-taken figures, and accumulated book depreciation. If the original's MACRS basis is empty, every piece's is empty too, and the Allocation Preview shows a dash rather than $0.00 in that column. Each piece then computes its basis the same way the original did.

An authoritative zero is different from a blank and is treated as a real figure. Zero allocates to zero on every piece.

What stays on the original only

Notes, attachments, annotations, and computed state adjustments stay attached to the original record. They are not copied to the new pieces.

What the pieces do not get

New pieces are created with disposal fields empty, CIP off, and the vehicle fields (VIN, gross vehicle weight, business-use percentage) empty. Vendor import provenance stays on the original record and is not copied.
