Set up a client and the taxpayer under it by hand, when you are not creating them on the way through an import.
Both are quick. The entity is where the settings that matter live.
Where this is in the app
Clients in the left nav → Add client — then open the client → Add entity
Add the client
Clients in the left nav, then Add client.
One field, Client Name, then Create client. Nothing else is asked, and nothing else is needed.
Add the entity
Open the client and use Add entity. Three sections.
Entity Information
Field | |
Client | Prefilled from the client you opened. Required. |
Entity Name | Required. |
EIN | Optional, in the format XX-XXXXXXX. |
Entity Type | Required. C Corporation (1120), S Corporation (1120S), Partnership (1065), Sole Proprietor (Schedule C), Trust/Estate, or Exempt Organization (990). |
Enabled States. Tick the states this entity operates in, and pick a Default Allocation State. The states you tick here show up again at the top of every return you create under this entity, in a group headed Entity enabled states and already selected, so setting them once saves picking them each year.
Fiscal Year. A Fiscal Year Start Month and a Fiscal Year End Month.
Then Add entity.
What you see afterward
The client page carries a stat row across the top, Entities, Returns, Current assets, and Current cost, the last two scoped to each entity's latest return, and a card for each entity showing its name, EIN, and entity type with its own return count and an asset and cost total labeled with that return's tax year (or with no year, if the entity has no return yet).
Clicking that card opens the entity's most recent return. Until you create one, there is nothing under the entity to open. See Create a return, and roll it forward next year.
Changing or retiring a client
Edit and Archive sit at the top right of a client page. The Clients list has a Show archived toggle next to its search box.
