A return is one entity for one tax year, and it owns that year's assets. Creating next year's return is how last year's register carries forward.
Create the return
The Dashboard groups your returns by client. + Add return sits on each client's header row, and asks which entity the return is for. If the entity does not exist yet, New entity… at the bottom of that picker creates it first. Add return is also in the header of any return you have open, and an entity with no returns yet offers its own Add return button the moment you open it.
Either way you land on the Add return page.
Return Details
Tax Entity, required. Pre-filled with the entity you started from. The dropdown lists every entity in your firm with its type, so you can switch here.
Tax Year, required. A four-digit year, pre-filled for you.
States. "Select states for this return. Leave empty for federal only." The list opens with an Entity enabled states group holding the states set on the entity, already ticked, and every other state under Other states. A line under the list counts what you are about to create: "1 state return(s) will be created."
Roll Over Assets. Covered below.
Then Create return.
Roll a prior year forward
The Roll Over Assets section of the Add return page picks up where last year left off. Source Return comes pre-set to your most recent prior return. Pick a different one, or choose None - Start with empty return to begin with a blank register.
The form states what carries: assets are cloned with accumulated depreciation carried forward, and disposed assets are excluded. So next year opens with the register in the state you left it, not with a blank grid and not with assets you already retired.
Rollover is offered when you are creating a single return. Tick two or more states and the batch is created without it; roll assets into each state return individually afterwards.
You can also start a rollover without the form: Roll over to next year is in the ⋯ menu on any return row on the Dashboard, and in the ⋯ menu at the top right of an open return.
And an empty return offers the carry-forward itself. Open a return with no assets when the entity's earlier year has some, and the Assets tab leads with This return has no assets yet and a one-click button to roll the earlier year forward, accumulated depreciation included. Disposed assets stay behind here too.
Track where a return stands
Status is the Draft / Done toggle in the return header. On the Dashboard, the Drafts, Importing, and Done chips filter the return list by status, with a count on each.
The rest of the return menu
Click a return row on the Dashboard to open the return itself. The row's ⋯ menu holds everything else: Edit return, Roll over to next year, Delete return, and Edit entity. The same menu sits at the top right of an open return, and the return's History tab holds its run history.
