Four levels sit between signing in and an asset. Knowing which level a piece of information belongs to is most of learning the product.
The breadcrumb at the top of a return spells the bottom three out: Clients / Enduros / Food Trucks (2025). The entity and its tax year share the last step. A fiscal-year entity reads (FY 2025) instead, and hovering it shows the full date range.
Your firm
The account itself. Everyone you invite works in the same firm data and sees the same clients.
Firm-level things live under Settings: your plan, your users, exports to tax software, the audit log, and a full data export. See What's in Settings.
A client
Who you bill. Add client asks for one thing, Client Name, because that is all a client is.
The Clients list shows each client's entity count, current asset count, and current cost, the last two scoped to each entity's latest return, so a client is also the level you look at when you want a portfolio view rather than one return.
An entity
The taxpayer. This is the level that carries identity, and it is where a few settings are made once and inherited by every return under it.
Add entity asks for:
Entity Name, required.
EIN, optional, in the format XX-XXXXXXX.
Entity Type, required. C Corporation (1120), S Corporation (1120S), Partnership (1065), Sole Proprietor (Schedule C), Individual — Rental (Schedule E), Trust/Estate, or Exempt Organization (990).
Enabled States, the states this entity operates in, plus a Default Allocation State.
Fiscal Year, a start month and an end month.
One client can hold several entities. The Clients list counts them in an Entities column.
A return
One entity, one tax year. Assets belong to the return, which is the single most useful thing to know about the structure.
That is why each year is a closed record rather than a register that quietly changes underneath last year's numbers, and why next year starts by rolling this year forward. See Create a return, and roll it forward next year.
A return also carries the states you selected for it, and its own status.
Getting to a return
Clicking an entity opens its most recent return on the Assets tab. There is no separate entity screen to pass through.
Once you are in, the dropdown next to the entity name lists that entity's returns, newest first, labeled year, state, and status, like 2026 · NC · Draft. Switching years is that dropdown.
