List a year's asset additions

A
Written by Andy

See every asset placed in service in one tax year, with its Section 179, bonus and depreciable basis, subtotaled by quarter. Add book columns when you need to tie the year's additions to the GL.

Where this is in the app

Dashboard → open the return → Report tab → Report Template → Current-Year Additions

Pick the year

A Year list appears next to Report Template. It opens on the return's tax year and also lists every earlier year in which an asset on the register was placed in service.

The table heading names the year: Current-Year Additions - Tax Year 2025 for the return's own year, Additions - Tax Year 2021 for an earlier one. The blue note under the table states the exact date range the report covers.

An asset disposed of since then still appears in the year it was placed in service.

What the table shows

One row per asset, in placed-in-service order, with these columns:

Column

What it holds

Asset ID

The asset's ID, or a dash if it has none

Description

Always shown

Placed in Service, Acquired

The asset's dates. A dash means no acquired date is recorded

Qtr

The quarter of the tax year the asset was placed in service, Q1 to Q4

Tax Basis

The asset's cost basis

Sec 179, Bonus

The Section 179 and bonus amounts on the asset

Depr Basis

Tax basis less Section 179 and bonus

Life, Method, Conv

Recovery period, depreciation method and convention

Property Class

For example Personal Property

Listed

Yes for listed property

After each quarter comes a subtotal row, for example Q1 subtotal (2 assets), then a TOTAL row for the year. The subtotals are there to check the mid-quarter test.

Earlier years

For the return's own year, Section 179, bonus and depreciable basis come from the current calculation.

For an earlier year, Section 179 and bonus are the totals recorded on each asset as taken to date. A dash means none was recorded, and a total that includes a dash shows a dash too, so a column never shows a partial sum. The note under the table says the same thing.

Add book columns

Click Columns at the right of the bar above the table. Book Cost, Book Life, Book Method and GL Account sit at the bottom of the list, unticked. Tick the ones you want and use the arrows under Order to place them.

Book cost ties to the Additions column of the GL Rollforward & Reconciliation report for the same year.

To keep the setup, click Save As... under Saved layouts in the same panel. See Save a report layout for your firm.

Export it

Export → This report offers Excel, CSV and PDF. The PDF is built in the background and gives you a Download link when it is ready. Each file name starts with the report and year, then the client and entity, for example CurrentYearAdditions_2025_ABC_Manufacturing_ABC_Manufacturing_LLC.xlsx.
